A Recent Rainy Night in Franklin...
Late Friday night I pulled off my soaked shoes and peeled my socks from my feet while reflecting on the events of the evening. No one wanted to warm up in the rain at the Franklin High School track. None of the coaches wanted to stand in the wind and get pelted by the downpour. Not one of the West Carrollton cheering crew was interested in watching any kind of pirate activity in the rain. Yet, we did what we thought we should do.

When Kiki Behr felt her muscle pull she continued to jump and, on her last jump, even improved all the way to second. This would be her last athletic activity of the night due to her injury. Then Hannah Fournier also had her best jump on her last attempt of the night to get a place. I began to wonder if this was a good sign of the effort that would be put forth during the evening, despite the wind and the rain.

The girls 4x800 team stunned everyone with a fourth place, their best of the year. Brittany Swift and Ashley Tharp hung on to wet poles and were on their way to a one-two finish and 18 big points. Ashley Theiss brought West Carrolton their first points of the year in the girls shot and the discus. The lady Pirates were competing with everyting they had.

The loudspeaker announced surprise points for the boys team with a 3rd in the shot by Allen Dunston. Then when we heard Jared Patton brought home a 2nd in the high jump we wondered what other big surprises would come our way.

Brett Gault's first in the 110 meter hurdles was no stunner but Ibrahima Seck's first in the 1600 was! The relays collected vital points but everyone was in for a little pirate pride when the 300 hurdles were run. The 1-2 finish by Gault and D'Angelo Byrd put West Carrollton in contention for a possible runner-up trophy. The team attitude was never more evident than in the 3200 meter run as Seck and Jordan Farris took turns leading the race and came home with another 1-2 finish and 18 more precious points. The meet would come down to the 4x400 relay.

Amazingly though, due the rain and a disqualification, the meet did not come down to the 4x400 relay. We lost six points that would have sealed the victory when a minor infraction was called on our relay squad. The meet now would come down to the pole vault, which had been delayed due to the precipitation. Ironically, Josh Watts was not even scheduled to vault that evening because of a prior commitment. Yet, the rain delay allowed him to make the event and try to help the team salvage their first team trophy in years. This was not all the drama, though, as Josh jammed his thumb in a warm up vault and now was wondering if he could clear a height!

Back and forth the event went with Watts somehow pulling out some less than ideal vaults to stay in the competition. There were only four contestants left when the bar was raised for the last time. One of the jumpers was from Dixie (currently a few points behind West Carrollton) and one was Watts. Josh put his injury behind him and cleared the bar to thunderous applause from the pirate faithful and when the Dixie jumper missed his last attempt the victory celebration was on. West Carrollton track showed why they toiled in the wind and the rain that evening. They were there to compete and win some hardware for the red and the black.
